The need to regulate cellular division is common to all living organisms. While differences exist between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, eukaryotes share a large amount of conservation across the cell cycle factors and processes that are used to help one cell divide into two. Furthermore, the process of cell cycle regulation is intimately integrated with many other cellular biochemical processes, such as transcriptional and epigenetic regulation, alteration of metabolism, cell survival, development of specialized cells, etc. Thus, this topic can be applied to many different Biology sub-disciplines. Depending on your interests, you can easily find examples pertaining to cancer studies or genetics or evolution or tissue/organ patterning (just to name a few topics!).
