April Showers Us with Multiple Themes
As the school year begins its final stretch, the Library at Lewis University has been keeping up with the seasons and relevant topics for this time of year. In April, libraries typically celebrate poetry, along with gardening to mark the importance of Earth Day on the 22nd of the month. April also brings attention to the heritage of Arab Americans, as well as those on the Autism Disorder Spectrum.
For many universities, during this time of year students work on their end of semester projects and prepare for finals. In addition to these typical benchmarks for wrapping up the academic term, select students present research and designs they created during an annual event called Celebration of Scholarship.
April is Poetry Month
While the books on our leisure reading display are not entirely poetry, they are written in ways very different from typical fiction storytelling format. Most take on a humorous tone, but some do have bit more weight to them. If you cannot make it to the Library during April, we have eBooks with poetic flair too.
Arab American Heritage Month
For the Library's book display to celebrate Arab American Heritage, we pieced together titles about both the North African and Middle Eastern regions, since Arabs have lived throughout each. The history of that part of the world includes the beginnings of Christianity too, which is why a few of the books reference the Early Church. Quite timely for Easter.
Earth Day & Gardening Month
While Earth Day only takes up the 22nd, the entire month of April feels like a reawakening of spring and greenery, so we took up two exhibit spaces to honor just that. With imagery of gardens as art in one, and satellite photographs of Earth from space in the other, the Library reminds those walking by that we were first placed in a garden with the sole task of simply tending it (Genesis 2:15). May you find that beauty and simplicity in these mere photos.
Autism Acceptance Month
Said best by the people at the Autism Society, "Autism Acceptance Month celebrates and honors the experiences and identities of Autistic individuals. It emphasizes understanding, inclusion, and support, moving beyond awareness towards meaningful acceptance." We hope the exhibit put together from resources we have or found easily can inspire further research among our students, most certainly acceptance first though.
Celebrating Scholarship
As finals approach, very academically minded students submit designs and research worth sharing with the wider community. Presentations are performed and panels of judges rank best of show, in an annual Celebration of Scholarship accomplished by our very own Flyers. This book display promotes that intellectual work while questioning the purpose of exams as a form of evaluation. As always, an eBook list provides materials beyond the physical.
