Finding Cases

Search in the big box, either by Citation (i.e., 834 N.E.2d 432), by Parties (i.e.,   Brown  v. board of education) or by Topic (i.e., free speech and campus)

Then click on the magnifying glass on the left hand side to conduct the search

On your results page, you’ll see all types of resources associated with the case.

Narrow your results to just cases, by clicking on Cases  in the left hand menu.

On the next page, you’ll see all types of resources associated with the case. Narrow your results to just cases, by clicking on Cases (highlighted in pic)  in the left hand menu.


Alternatively, you can narrow for cases before you search.

Guided search is great for finding unknown cases.

Once you select cases,

  • You will be given an option to "Enter a jurisdiction." Under that,  "choose Federal Cases or State Cases."   Enter a state name or leave blank to search all states. 
  • Under about, type your topic.
  • And under "all dates" choose from the date options.

To get to advanced search, click on the text "Advanced Search" under the big search box.

Leave as the default to "search everything."  To limit to cases, click on "Select a specific content type" and then click "Cases."

The search boxes below will guide you to employ advanced searching techniques.

For example, if you want to find the phrase guidance counselor,  type this phrase in the box that reads "all of these terms."  After you have filled out your box(es), click the Add button. This will add those terms with the proper advanced search commands.

These advanced search commands are also to the left of the terms boxes so you can types these (and other power commands) in yourself.

 

Furthermore there are options to search through other fields. If you are searching just through cases, on the right hand side will be Segment Examples, which you can click on to see all the various examples

When you have too many results, always use the left hand gray menu to narrow or search within your results.

On the right hand side of any case, see the Shephardizing information. Basically you will see how the case has been cited and used positively or negatively.
