Abu al-hasan al-Mawardi

Abu al-Hasan al-Mawardi was a Shafii jurist. His most famous work was the Ordinances of Government. where he wrote an explanation of public law in relation to political theory. His writings introduced the question of the type of leadership that was appropriate for the Muslim community, and eventually decided that it is possible to have more than one executive organ of political power.

Al-Farabi

Abu Nasr Muhammad al-Farabi was a renowned philosopher who was a strong supporter of democracy. In his most famous book, The Views of the People of the Virtuous City, al-Farabi writes about a city based on justice that aims for the happiness of its citizens. He believes that free societies can be virtuous because good people in these societies have the choice to pursue virtue.

Saladin

Saladin (1137-1193) was a Muslim military and political leader. He led the Islamic forces during the Crusades, and even after he was defeated in the Third Crusade, was able to negotiate a truce with Richard the First that allowed Muslims control of Jerusalem. Saladin wanted to end Latin political and military control in the Middle East.
